Sean Scully's 'Sea Star' opens at the National Gallery in London

12 April 2019

A major exhibition of new and recent paintings by Sean Scully, ‘Sea Star’, opens on Saturday 13 April at the National Gallery in London. Often using the motif of the stripe or checkerboard, Scully’s abstract oil painted panel works evoke landscapes such as horizons, fields or coastlines, his contemplative forms becoming reminders of personal experiences and distinctive moments. The starting point for these particular new works is the atmospheric landscape of JMW Turner’s The Evening Star (1830), a work that Scully feels is one of Turner’s most profound and to which he has a deep connection.

Featuring large-scale, multi-panel paintings – most recently made using aluminium and copper surfaces – as well as works from his celebrated Landline series and works on paper, the exhibition demonstrates Scully’s distinctive approach to painting and a shared love of colour and composition with Turner.

‘Sea Star’ is on view until 11 August. Find out more on the National Gallery's website.
